The European Association for the Philosophy of Sport (EAPS) came into existence on April 26, 2008 in Aarhus (Denmark), when its constitution was adopted at the Inaugural Meeting, and first officers and the executive committee were elected, to prepare the first EAPS Conference in three years’ time as the most important task.

The aim of EAPS is to promote and disseminate research and scholarship in the philosophy of sport, with respect for and development of different philosophical traditions, and for a variety of aspects of movement cultures (competitive sport, physical education, movement recreation, movement art, etc.). This includes all activities to stimulate and encourage study, research and writing in the philosophy of sport and related fields (to organize and conduct meetings, to issue publications, to support and co-operate with the International Association of Philosophy of Sport, the British Philosophy of Sport Association, and other national and international associations of similar purpose). The objectives of the Association are to establish permanent dialogue among philosophers of sport in Europe, to organize regular academic meetings and conferences, and to communicate information in their fields of expertise.

The founding organisations of EAPS were the British Philosophy of Sport Association, the Slovenian Society for Philosophy of Sport, and the German Association for Sport Sciences (Philosophy of Sport Section). At present, individual membership of EAPS consists only of members of these founding organisations. However, any philosopher of sport who is not a member of a founding organisation, or who is from a country where no national society for the philosophy of sport exists, may now be admitted to the Association. Also, EAPS welcomes members from outside Europe. The elegant way to become a member is to participate in the First EAPS Conference in Prague in May 2011 and at the same time express your wish to become a member of EAPS. But there are no obstacles to admission before or after this event.

In Prague, the General Meeting of EAPS will take place, with reports, discussions and plans for next three years, and the election of a new Executive Committee and officers of the Association (President, Vice-President, Secretary-General). All philosophers of sport who express their interest in attending the Prague Conference will be involved in the pre-election process of candidate nominations, and will receive the requisite information and instructions from the Nominating Committee (Ivo Jirasek, Emily Ryall, Milan Hosta).

Welcome to membership of the European Association for the Philosophy of Sport!

Lev Kreft, President of EAPS,
